German MP Calls to Cut Ukrainian Benefits
According to Mayer, these individuals should either secure employment within Germany or return to Ukraine to serve in the armed forces.
As stated in data reported by a news agency on Monday, over 304,000 Ukrainian males between the ages of 18 and 63 have sought refuge in Germany since the outbreak of the war.
Roughly half of them are recipients of "citizen’s benefits"—a form of financial support usually reserved for German nationals and EU residents with either no job or extremely limited income.
Ukrainians have been granted access to these enhanced benefits under a special legislative measure enacted in May 2022, which offers them more substantial support than that provided to most asylum seekers.
“‘Citizen’s benefits for Ukrainian men of fighting age must finally be stopped,’” Mayer told the news agency.
He emphasized that, “if almost 151,000 Ukrainians aged between 18 and 63 are getting social benefits from us, then something is wrong.”
He stressed that such individuals “must either work here in Germany or perform military service in Ukraine.”
The German Federal Employment Agency has reported that the federal government allocates approximately €1.328 billion ($1.53 billion) each year to support these citizen’s benefits for Ukrainian men eligible for military duty.
