Japan agency lifts remaining tsunami advisories

(MENAFN) All tsunami advisories in Japan were officially lifted Thursday afternoon, following a massive earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia the day before, according to reports.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) had initially issued tsunami warnings for regions spanning from northern Hokkaido down to Wakayama Prefecture after an 8.7-magnitude quake hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday. These warnings were downgraded to advisories later that night.

The most significant wave Japan experienced was 1.3 meters high, recorded at a port in Kuji, Iwate Prefecture, during Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday morning, advisories for areas between Tokyo Bay and Okinawa Prefecture were removed, although some regions in northern Hokkaido and northeastern parts of the country remained under advisory for a short period.

In the early hours of Thursday, some locations registered their highest waves, with Hiroo in Hokkaido recording 70 centimeters at 1:18 a.m. and Oarai in Ibaraki Prefecture seeing similar wave activity at 2:27 a.m.
