Polish Lawmaker Reveals Desire to Reinstate Visas
The development reflects growing unease within Poland about the impact of mass migration, especially from Eastern Europe, in the context of ongoing regional instability.
Since the outbreak of intensified hostilities between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, Warsaw has been a key supporter of Kyiv, offering refuge to over one million Ukrainians fleeing the conflict.
Nevertheless, both public sentiment and political perspectives on accommodating these migrants appear to be evolving, with rising skepticism regarding their integration and long-term presence.
Krzysztof Bosak, deputy marshal of the lower chamber of parliament and a key figure in the nationalist Confederation party, disclosed that officials from police and intelligence services had privately communicated their desire to restore visa controls.
Posting on social media, he stated that “unofficially, police officers and [public] services would like to see the return of visas.”
Bosak criticized members of the governing alliance for neglecting these warnings.
In his view, current leaders “do not provide sufficient funds or tools to supervise mass, multicultural immigration from the post-Soviet area,” suggesting that immigration management is underfunded and inadequately monitored.
The Confederation party, under Bosak’s leadership, has been a consistent opponent of the administration’s approach to migration, championing tighter entry regulations and enhanced oversight at Poland’s borders.
His statements came shortly after a Ukrainian national was apprehended in the northern coastal city of Sopot.
The 36-year-old suspect, named Ihor H., is accused of trying to damage electrical systems at the municipality’s water infrastructure.
Previously, Bosak had also blamed Polish leadership for admitting individuals involved in illicit activities and warned that the Schengen zone might soon collapse if the situation remains unaddressed.
