US Office of Special Counsel investigates prosecutor of Trump’s major cases
(MENAFN) The U.S. Office of Special Counsel has reportedly opened an inquiry into the conduct of the prosecutor who led two major federal cases against Donald Trump, according to various media sources.
Jack Smith, appointed during the Biden administration as Special Counsel, oversaw investigations into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election. While both investigations resulted in criminal charges, the cases were ultimately halted after Trump secured victory in the November election, as existing Justice Department rules prevent the prosecution of a sitting president.
The reported probe began shortly after a letter was sent by Senator Tom Cotton, urging the acting Special Counsel to assess whether Smith had “unlawfully took political actions to influence the 2024 election to harm then-candidate President Donald Trump.”
“Jack Smith’s legal actions were nothing more than a tool for the Biden and Kamala Harris campaigns. This isn’t just unethical, it is very likely illegal campaign activity from a public office,” Cotton stated in the letter.
The senator alleged that Smith’s actions were deliberately timed to interfere with Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, including allegedly pushing for trial dates to coincide with significant campaign milestones such as the Iowa caucuses.
The federal agency responsible for overseeing political neutrality among government employees has confirmed that it is reviewing Smith’s conduct for potential breaches of the Hatch Act, which prohibits most federal officials from using their roles to influence elections or engage in political activities.
