Italy Backs EU’s Approach in US Tariff Talks
He emphasized that discussions with the United States regarding tariffs are still in an early phase and will require considerable time to reach a resolution.
“The European Union did well to prevent a trade war by suspending countermeasures. Now we must see how the negotiations will proceed," Tajani stated during a government function held in Ancona.
Addressing the current status of the discussions, he noted that “we are still at a general framework with a 15% tariff,” referencing the initial level of proposed levies.
“But exemptions will have to be evaluated, and talks must continue sector by sector," as cited by an Italian news agency.
Tajani admitted that the talks are currently in a fact-finding stage and that “final assessments will only be made at the end of a process that could take weeks, if not months.”
He underlined Italy’s active collaboration with both Brussels and Washington to shield its distinguished export goods from potential adverse effects.
“We are strongly committed, as Italians, to ensuring our quality products are safeguarded,” he added.
Tajani further highlighted that the EU’s present 15% tariff structure might actually offer a strategic benefit in comparison to nations subjected to higher import charges.
“This could represent an opportunity to enter markets that have so far been inaccessible,” he remarked.
