US Probes Prosecutor in Trump-Related Case
Under President Joe Biden’s leadership, ex-Special Counsel Jack Smith directed criminal probes concerning Trump’s management of classified files and supposed efforts to challenge the outcome of the 2020 election.
These inquiries culminated in indictments against Trump, who denied all allegations. However, the cases were dismissed following Trump’s win in the November presidential race, as Justice Department policies prohibit legal action against a president in office.
This new inquiry is said to have been triggered by a letter sent last week by Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas).
In his message, Cotton urged acting Special Counsel Jamieson Greer to investigate whether Smith had “unlawfully took political actions to influence the 2024 election to harm then-candidate President Donald Trump.”
Cotton further contended in the letter — cited by the news outlet — that “Jack Smith’s legal actions were nothing more than a tool for the Biden and Kamala Harris campaigns. This isn’t just unethical, it is very likely illegal campaign activity from a public office.”
The senator accused Smith of engaging in openly political behavior intended to derail Trump’s 2024 presidential run.
He alleged that Smith expedited investigations in an attempt to align trial proceedings with significant political milestones, including the Iowa caucuses.
