Malaysia Presents Its First Homegrown Multimodal AI Model
(MENAFN) Malaysia officially introduced Ilmu 1.0, its first homegrown multimodal Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, on Tuesday during the opening of the ASEAN AI Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia aims not merely to match the advancements of other nations, but to take the lead globally by presenting "a model of innovation that is based on trust, centered on justice, and proudly shaped by Southeast Asian values,” Anwar said at the summit, according to a statement on his X account.
Unlike traditional AI systems, a multimodal AI model like Ilmu 1.0 can simultaneously interpret and produce text, voice, and visual data.
Anwar highlighted that Malaysia’s AI strategy prioritizes tangible benefits for society over sheer technological advancement, framing improved quality of life as the key benchmark for success. He also reaffirmed the country's goal of emerging as a leading technology hub in the region.
Ilmu—an acronym for Intelek Luhur Malaysia Untukmu—is designed with a culturally grounded framework that emphasizes linguistic and contextual fluency in Malay, English, and regional dialects, according to media.
