Russia Refutes Romanian Airspace Incursion Claims

(MENAFN) Russia has forcefully denied accusations that one of its drones entered Romanian airspace, asserting that no credible evidence has been offered to support the claim. The incident, which occurred near the Ukrainian border, has intensified regional security concerns amid ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.

The Romanian Defense Ministry reported that its surveillance systems tracked an unidentified drone breaching national airspace on Saturday. Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu said two F-16 fighter jets were dispatched and came close to intercepting the drone before it reversed course and headed back toward Ukraine. He also mentioned that similar incidents take place on an almost weekly basis.

In response, the Russian Embassy in Bucharest rejected the accusations, arguing that Romanian officials had not presented any concrete proof identifying the drone’s origin. Following the Romanian Foreign Ministry’s summoning of Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev on September 14, the embassy issued a statement declaring: “not a single specific and convincing answer was given to any question about the identification of the drone that allegedly flew into Romanian airspace.”

The embassy further stated: “Due to the lack of objective confirmation of the nationality of the aircraft, the protest of the Romanian side was rejected as far-fetched and unfounded.” Ambassador Lipaev went further, claiming, “all the facts indicate that in reality there was a deliberate provocation by the Kiev regime,” and suggested that Ukraine was attempting to provoke NATO into a direct confrontation with Russia.

This latest incident follows a similar claim from Poland last week. Authorities in Warsaw reported that 19 Russian drones had allegedly breached Polish airspace, with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski describing it as an effort by Moscow to probe NATO’s defensive response.

Moscow has categorically denied the Polish allegations, maintaining that the drones in question were incapable of reaching Polish territory. Russian officials accused certain Western European actors—described as the “European party of war”—of exaggerating such claims to inflame tensions and justify increased defense budgets.

The Kremlin has repeatedly rejected claims that Russia poses an imminent threat, contending that Western countries are using such incidents to fuel public fear and legitimize increased defense expenditures.
