Oxford Union president-elect disciplinary proceedings for supporting Charlie Kirk murder

(MENAFN) George Abaraonye, the incoming president of the Oxford Union, is under disciplinary review and could face a vote of no confidence after making controversial comments about the killing of US conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The debating society confirmed that formal complaints have been lodged against Abaraonye, which will be “addressed with the utmost seriousness” through its disciplinary procedures. While the Union cannot immediately remove a president-elect, its rules permit expulsion if serious misconduct is established.

Over 200 life members—alumni who have retained membership—have expressed support for a no confidence motion, surpassing the 150-signature requirement to trigger proceedings, as stated by reports.

Abaraonye, who debated Kirk at the Union in May, shared celebratory messages on WhatsApp and Instagram after Kirk was fatally shot at a campus event in Utah on Wednesday. One message read: “CHARLIE KIRK GOT SHOT LET’S F****** GO,” while another stated: “Charlie Kirk got shot loool.”

Union officials condemned his messages as “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable,” emphasizing that “free speech cannot and will not come at the expense of violence, intimidation, or hate.”

The Union also criticized threats reportedly directed at Abaraonye following the public backlash, stating: “No individual should ever be attacked because of the color of their skin or the community they come from.”

According to Union rules, a no confidence motion cannot be submitted until the new term begins on October 12. To succeed, it must collect 150 signatures within 48 hours, followed by a debate and vote open to all student and life members.

Kirk, 31, founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead while speaking at Utah Valley University in what many have described as a politically motivated assassination. Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged with aggravated murder.
