Samoa Names Laaulialemalietoa as New Prime Minister
The inaugural session of Samoa’s newly elected 18th Parliament was held on Tuesday at the Tuanaimato Multipurpose Gymnasium in Apia, where lawmakers also took their oaths of office.
During the session, all 31 Members of Parliament representing the majority FAST (Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi) party formally endorsed Laaulialemalietoa as their party’s nominee and confirmed his appointment as Prime Minister.
In his address, Laaulialemalietoa expressed gratitude to his family and the nation, urging unity. “Work together hand in hand to build a stronger Samoa in united peace and harmony,” he said.
Born in 1966, Laaulialemalietoa brings decades of political experience to the role. He has previously held positions as both speaker and deputy speaker of parliament, in addition to serving two terms as minister responsible for agriculture, fisheries, and scientific research.
In the latest general election, the FAST party secured 30 seats, gaining a parliamentary majority with the support of an independent MP who joined the party post-election—bringing their total to 31 out of 51 seats.
The opposition HRPP (Human Rights Protection Party) captured 14 seats, while the Samoa Uniting Party (SUP), led by outgoing Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, managed to win just 3 seats.
