National Guard Troops Withdraw from Portland, Chicago
A US Defense Department representative told a news agency on Saturday that approximately 200 federalized California National Guard troops who were sent to Portland, along with another 200 Texas National Guard members stationed in Chicago last month, will all be returning home.
The White House had defended the deployments as crucial to “protect federal assets and personnel,” with President Donald Trump invoking Title 10, which permits troop mobilization if the president determines “there is a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the government of the United States.”
Nonetheless, federal courts repeatedly prevented the administration from placing troops on city streets following lawsuits initiated by local and state officials. On Friday, the administration sought Supreme Court intervention to reverse a ruling that permanently blocked National Guard deployment in Portland.
The defense official also indicated that the number of federalized Oregon Guard personnel would drop from 200 to 100, while roughly 300 Illinois Guard members will stay under federal oversight.
This adjustment comes after a statement issued Friday by US Northern Command, which said the Department of War—the term preferred by the Trump administration for the Defense Department—would “be shifting and/or rightsizing our Title 10 footprint in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago to ensure a constant, enduring, and long-term presence in each city.”
