Russia Calls in German Envoy Over Reported Meeting with Chechen Figure

(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it has summoned German Ambassador Alexander Graf Lambsdorff following a reported meeting involving a German parliamentarian and Akhmed Zakayev, a former Russian citizen described by Moscow as a wanted criminal, according to reports.

The ministry stated that it delivered a formal protest to the ambassador regarding the meeting, which it said took place in Kyiv.

In its statement, the ministry said: “The Ambassador was issued a decisive protest in connection with a recent meeting in Kyiv, facilitated by the Zelensky regime, between a Bundestag deputy, member of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs from the ruling Christian Democratic Union party, Roderich Kiesewetter and Akhmed Zakayev, the leader of the terrorist organization 'Chechen Republic of Ichkeria' banned in Russia and is on an international wanted list.”

It further claimed that the German lawmaker expressed support for what it called anti-Russian activities involving members of the group, which Moscow alleges were involved in operations connected to fighting in Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions.

The ministry also alleged that Kiesewetter encouraged Zakayev and his associates to work with Berlin, including efforts to recruit Russian emigrants living in Germany for activities aimed at influencing internal conditions in Russia.

It stated: “Moscow regards this meeting between a German parliament deputy and notorious criminals as indisputable proof of the German authorities' intent to interfere in the internal affairs of Russia and create threats to Russia's national security, including through interaction with terrorist structures under the auspices of the Kyiv criminal regime.”

German officials have not publicly confirmed or responded to the allegations at the time of reporting, according to reports.
