Provided by AGPIn a statement attributed to an EU Commission spokesperson, the bloc reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at preserving the fragile truce and preventing further escalation, despite continued reports of deadly strikes affecting civilians and emergency responders.
The EU emphasized the importance of maintaining the temporary ceasefire and its extension, describing it as essential for advancing stability and reducing tensions in the region. It also expressed support for continued bilateral dialogue between Israel and Lebanon, framing negotiations as the preferred path toward long-term de-escalation in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The statement also underscored Brussels’ longstanding position on Lebanese sovereignty, calling for full respect for the country’s territorial integrity.
Additionally, the EU urged all sides to comply with international humanitarian law, including obligations to protect civilians, civilian infrastructure, UN peacekeepers, and humanitarian workers operating in conflict zones.
The remarks come as concerns grow over continued Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon despite a US-mediated ceasefire that entered into force in April and was later extended into early July.
