EU Lawmakers Demand Action Over Detained Flotilla Activists

(MENAFN) According to reports, mounting criticism across Europe over Israel’s handling of activists detained from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla has led to renewed pressure on EU institutions to consider sanctions and a possible suspension of the EU-Israel agreement.

The calls intensified after video footage surfaced showing Itamar Ben-Gvir moving among detained activists, where he appeared to taunt and mock them while holding an Israeli flag following the interception of the aid convoy by Israeli forces.

The circulated footage showed detainees kneeling in tightly packed groups with their hands restrained behind their backs, while Itamar Ben-Gvir was seen addressing them in a manner widely criticized after the video spread online.

As stated by reports, several European governments condemned the treatment, with countries including Spain, Italy, Belgium, and the United Kingdom summoning Israeli ambassadors in response to the incident.

Members of the European Parliament told reports that the episode reflects not only concerns over the treatment of humanitarian activists and EU citizens but also what they described as a broader pattern of impunity. They argued that the situation now requires a concrete political response from Brussels.
