Germany Eyes Russia Peace Talks Within Months

(MENAFN) The German government sees a diplomatic opening for negotiations to end the war in Ukraine materializing within months, even as frontline violence shows no signs of abating, according to a report released Wednesday.

German media cited government sources stating that "A window for talks between the European side and Russia is slowly opening. However, the fierce fighting of recent days indicates that this process is likely to take months, rather than just weeks."

The assessment comes amid intensifying battlefield activity, suggesting Berlin is tempering cautious optimism with a firm grip on ground realities.

When pressed on the report during a Wednesday press briefing in the German capital, deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer reaffirmed Berlin's commitment to a negotiated resolution. "We have repeatedly emphasized that we have a strong interest in seeing this war come to an end," he stated.

"We've always said that if such an opportunity were to arise, we would of course be ready to do our part," he added.

Behind the scenes, European capitals are already engaged in preliminary discussions over who would anchor the continent's negotiating position at any future talks, according to media.

Government sources signaled that a core trilateral bloc is expected to anchor Europe's diplomatic role. "There are strong indications that the E3 will continue to play a key role in this process," they were quoted as saying.

The E3 designation refers to Germany, Britain, and France — the three European heavyweights who have historically coordinated on major diplomatic initiatives. European nations have, however, found themselves largely pushed to the periphery of Ukraine-related negotiations in recent months, raising pointed questions about the continent's influence over any eventual peace framework.
