White House Sees Netanyahu’s Campaign Push as Act of Desperation

(MENAFN) The White House reportedly considers Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intensified efforts to secure public backing from US President Donald Trump a "sign of desperation" ahead of Israel’s parliamentary elections on Tuesday.

According to reports citing a US source familiar with the matter, American officials view Netanyahu’s "aggressive" lobbying as an indication that he believes he is losing ground in the electoral race.

Netanyahu reportedly held two conversations with Trump within three days, seeking to strengthen the US president’s endorsement issued last week. He also proposed specific wording for further support and arranged phone interviews with Israeli journalists.

The Israeli prime minister faces a challenging electoral contest against opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot.

Final television polls published on Friday indicated that Netanyahu’s governing coalition was projected to fall significantly short of the seats required to secure a parliamentary majority.
