150,000 Gen Z Protesters Set to Defy Merz Oct. 31

(MENAFN) A youth movement that says more than 150,000 people have signed up online is preparing street protests across Germany on October 31 against Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his coalition government, after issuing a sharply worded open letter on Thursday.

The group, Gen Z Regelt (“Gen Z handles it”), is a coalition of high school and university students, apprentices and young professionals. Its letter accuses the government of putting young people’s futures at risk.

“We can no longer stand by and watch as you gamble away our future. Your austerity policies are stripping us of all hope,” the group said in the letter, which was published online.

Five major cities, 27 more on the list
Organizers plan large rallies in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne, with demonstrations in 27 additional cities. The group says the marches will be peaceful.

“All this is happening while you refuse to listen to us, do not take our fears seriously, or consider our objections. We’ve had enough,” the group said. “Your policies are driving our future into a dead end! That is why, on October 31st, we are taking to the streets in over 20 cities—peacefully, loudly, and with determination.”

Grievances: spending cuts, climate, war, conscription
The students target reductions in social spending and the government’s climate record. They also say officials have ignored young people’s anxieties about wars and conflicts, and they oppose plans to bring back military conscription.

Demands put to Merz
The group’s list of demands opens with “money for schools instead of cuts” and “an affordable life,” which it places at the top of the agenda. It also calls for a fairer sharing of burdens “instead of saving on the younger generation,” a clear “no to conscription,” and stronger safeguards for fundamental rights “instead of expanding surveillance.” The final demand is serious climate protection measures so that young people could have a future.
