South Sudan Attacks Kill 84, Threatening December Vote
William Wol Mayom Bol, caretaker minister of information and communication services in Warrap State, said an assault on Bundir village in Akop Payam on Tuesday claimed another 12 lives. In a statement, Wol described the assault as “unprovoked” and “coordinated,” and said 13 others were seriously wounded.
Tuesday’s raid came a day after armed youths from neighboring Mayom County in Unity State struck on Monday, killing 72 people in the initial attack. The attackers burned Bundir village to the ground and looted property, the minister said.
Wol urged calm and restraint. Security forces are being deployed to the most volatile areas to restore order and hunt down those responsible, he said.
The bloodshed adds to a recent surge in communal violence across South Sudan ahead of general elections scheduled for December. The unrest imperils the vote, particularly in volatile areas including Lakes, Jonglei, Warrap, Unity and Upper Nile states.
